Okay, so let's talk about this comic dub because HOLY CRAP I think this was the most complicated comic dub I've done since "Bonjour from the Other Side"? And for that one, Tamara did most of the heavy lifting through her wonderful singing and I just had to fit in the commentary from the other characters. This one, I had to think pretty hard about what I wanted to do with the mix and how best to express Disteal's comic with the additional of sound and some (limited) animated panels. I think I spent about three times as much time (if not more!) on this dub that I normally do for some of the other videos on this channel.

The biggest thing I knew I had to get right was the music. I knew I wanted something classical (and hopefully French) but that didn't really narrow things down any. At first, I wanted to use something from Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" because that would have fit Widowmaker's past as a ballet dancer (AND her Odette and Odile skins) so well! Two problems, one: finding a good public domain recording or free to use version of the ballet was an exercise in finding something promising only for it to sound like it was recorded off a scratchy record player; two: "Swan Lake" is a little on the "too grandoise and sweepingly melodramatic" side for a personal sequence like Gerard and Amelie's talk-and-fight (at least in my opinion, someone else could make this work!). So as much as I wanted to use "Swan Lake", it was out :c

So then I thought about what else could work. Something piano-based, maybe? I thought of using "Gymnopedie No 1" by Erik Satie, which was a nicely melancholy piece and could have worked pretty well! Also, it would have been a nice little callback to when I used it for "That Coffee Shop AU Fanfiction" ho ho ho. But in the end I decided against it: it never really varied from its slow and stately pace, and it maintained its tone for the entire piece when I wanted a little bit of "oomph" for the flashback sequences.

Considered Bethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" (way too melancholy) and Chopin's "Nocturne Op. 9 no. 2" (close! but a little bit too "pleasant" all the way through) as well, but nothing seemed to work. Then I remember Chopin's "Raindrop" and immediately set it aside because I'd used it previously in another, completely different project where it fit PERFECTLY, so using it again would obviously have been cheating and a rehash. Because I dunno. My brain works weird.

As you can see however, I did decide to use Chopin's "Raindrop" in the end, with some tricksy editing on my part to make it flow from the opening playfulness (kinda) to the more melancholy fight scene (purists will be horrified. please forgive me) and VOILA! This comic dub was born! And then I added everything else and I would go on about them but WOW this description is way too huge already so I'll end it here I think. Tell me if you want to hear more about my process though! Or don't. Because I will never shut up. o:

TL;DR finding music for comic dubz is hard you gaiz o:
